For as long as it has been possible to carry music around with us, we have sought to do so. Originally this might mean carrying an instrument with us and a book of songs in our head, but today we have greater portability, and more than just a few books. Whilst carrying a stereo around that was powered by batteries might be considered the first portable music system, it wasn't very considerate as far as those around were concerned.

Portable music systems that allow the listener great choice and good sound quality whilst not inflicting their taste in music on everyone around them were first developed as audio cassette systems, often referred to as 'Walkmans'.

These audio cassette systems were eventually replaced by those which could use CDs or compact disks instead. These were much smaller, offering much better sound quality and the disks took up much less room than the audio cassettes did, whilst often carrying more tracks.

But there was always a problem with portable music systems that relied upon physical mechanics to play the music. Whether audio cassettes or compact disks, in order to play the music the small mechanisms inside required very little movement or motion, and certainly no jarring or jolting. Any sudden movement or knock would result in a very unpleasant wobble or skip in the music, and possibly damage to the tape, disk or player itself.

Because most people on the move don't want to have to stand still at the same time, this always p[resented a challenge, and today we are able to benefit from the achievements made in this field. Today, portable music players use technology which does not require any moving pats at all. There are no disks or tapes, simply a static block of memory which stores the music in an electronic form which means that there is no movement, no mechanism and no way in which the music can skip, jump, wobble or even be damaged regardless of how much shaking, jumping or even dropping takes place.

Those people who enjoy hiking or running have often enjoyed listening to music to accompany their activities, especially if all alone for hours at a time. Unfortunately cassettes and disks jumped and were not pleasant to listen to whilst running, but today MP3 players as they are referred to have solved this problem, and represent the perfect solution.

Portable music players which use flash memory technology are often referred to as MP3 players because the most portable form of music file is the MP3. This form of music track has been considerably compressed compared to an original recording or even a CD track, which means it takes up very little space. This results in even more songs being able to be stored on the player - in some cases many tens of thousands.

Although MP3 files are very heavily compressed, and naturally a good deal of the original recording is lost, the way in which these music tracks has been compressed is very clever, and only those notes and frequencies which the ear cannot detect very well have been removed, meaning that most, untrained ears, cannot tell the difference.

Would you be interested in knowing what keyword phrases Google think are the most related to your search query?  Would you like this list of results to be kept updated all the time?  How about accessing the information anytime you need it?

And in addition what about if I mentioned that you could retrieve all the information using nothing but Firefox (or any other browser)  and a standard Google search?

Does that take your fancy?  Good, lets get into the detail....

Firstly lets start with the basics and spend a moment discussing relevance, as this term a very important part of Googles search engine results.

Google wants to provide the person searching with extremely accurate and relevant results that it can.  They are aware that if they are unable to provide this info, it’s likely that users will stop using their search engine completely, and no users means no ad revenues which is their primary source of income!

For a prime example of a search engine losing market share, spend a second for AltaVista?  In its time it was the most used search engine, and very quickly lost the crown to Google because they lost the plot with relevance.

I doubt there is such a thing as search engine loyalty (at least not for the non Internet Marketing search engine person).  If a better alternative comes along, the average user will just start using that service.

Trust me when I say Google are very aware of this, and put a heap of thought and manpower into making sure that when you use Google, the results that come back are completely related to your search term.

Google have to keep the average searcher happy so that they use Google all the time.

Shred Internet Marketers have, of course located methods to "game" Google in the past, so that their own web pages show up instead of what should be the most relevant pages, and such tricks are still used in  modern times.

Usually these tricks are located by Google who is getting cleverer at finding these types of hacks.

Google seems to get it right most of the time, and certainly more than the other major search engines at this point in time.

Ok so given that Google is currently providing the most relevant information and has the biggest user base compared to any other search engine, and that its obvious that their primary goal is information relevance to their users, does it not make sense to use Googles search results and be using this information more when conducting keyword research?

For example lets say your searching for the keyword phrase web traffic

When I typed in keyword phrase into google, I got a list of current pages that Google believe are the most relevance to that search term (along with a host of ads).

But in additional to these results at the bottom of the page they also provide (and here is the key)....

Searches RELATED to: increase web traffic (Their words).

Hmm interesting a list of keywords that Google think are relevant to my search.

Google actually display to you the keywords that they deem to be the most relevant to your search.

Now if you do some research about this, there is some speculation on how google decide on what search terms are displayed, but no matter what you think I think it's certainly worth looking at, isn’t it?

In my testing I found the keywords it came up with seemed to be terms heavily searched on.

In the case of web traffic, the search terms I got back were

increase web traffic
free web traffic
buy web traffic
google web traffic
web traffic report
web traffic generator
web traffic monitoring
measure web traffic

They all seem pretty related to my original search.

And you can drill down by clicking on a phrase to get relevant keywords to that phrase.  For example I could have selected increase web traffic and received a list of related search terms that relate to that term.

This is getting interesting.   Before you discount this technique compared to using your favorite keyword research program, It's my suggestion consider the following.

1)  The information from these searches are directly from Googles data banks, so the information has not been corrupted in any way.

Many keyword tools do not use data from Google at all (Wordtracker) or combine data from multiple sources.  Here we have information direct from the source!

2) The information returned from Google is of course very up to date, unlike a lot of other keyword research data that can be months out of date.

I am not suggesting that you get rid of all other keyword tools in favor of this technique, but I do recommend you check it out.  With all the latest whiz bang all conquering, overly hyped software tools that seemingly gets released everyday, sometimes it pays to take a step back and go back to just using a very simple method like searching in Google!

In my case, I actually use this method in conjunction with other keyword tools, and get the best out of both worlds.  My two favorite keyword research tools currently are Nichebot and Market Samurai (google them).

I find the best use of this method is when searching new niches, or when trying to establish the viability of entering a particular market.

One final thing to note is that unfortunately not all keywords are supported.  Sometimes no related search terms are provided for a given keyword, but given that it’s free I’m happy to overlook that oversight.

And occasionally I have to mention that the search terms returned seem a little bizarre.  But this seems to be in more unusual niches that perhaps Google have not collected enough information for (my speculation).

Get out there and have a look at the related search function in Google.  The search terms that come back might end up being very useful.
